IDNO/Land Rights

Land rights play a crucial role in assisting Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) in several ways, impacting their ability to develop, maintain, and expand electricity distribution networks.

Here’s how:

1. Securing Infrastructure Development

Access to Land:

Land rights ensure that IDNOs have the legal access needed to install, operate, and maintain distribution infrastructure such as substations, transformers, and distribution lines. Without secure land rights, these critical infrastructure projects could face delays or legal challenges.

Right of Way:

Obtaining rights of way is essential for laying distribution lines across various properties. Land rights agreements, such as easements, allow IDNOs to install and maintain overhead or underground lines without owning the land, thus facilitating network expansion and reliability.

2. Financial Security and Investment

Investment Attraction:

Secure land rights can make an IDNO more attractive to investors. Investors are more likely to fund projects where the risk of land disputes is minimised, ensuring a stable environment for their investment.

Loan Collateral:

IDNOs can use land rights as collateral to secure loans and financing for infrastructure projects, ensuring they have the necessary capital to build and upgrade their networks.

3. Regulatory Compliance and Planning

Compliance with Regulations:

IDNOs must comply with various regulations regarding land use and environmental impact. Secure land rights help ensure compliance with these regulations, avoiding legal issues and potential fines.

Strategic Planning:

With secure land rights, IDNOs can plan long-term projects more effectively. They can optimise the layout of their network to ensure efficient distribution, minimise losses, and plan for future growth.

4. Operational Efficiency

Uninterrupted Operations:

Secure land rights reduce the risk of disputes that could interrupt operations. This ensures that IDNOs can provide consistent and reliable service to their customers.

Maintenance and Upgrades:

With the legal right to access land, IDNOs can perform necessary maintenance and upgrades more efficiently, ensuring the reliability and safety of the distribution network.

5. Conflict Resolution

Dispute Avoidance and Resolution:

Clear land rights help avoid conflicts with landowners and other stakeholders. When disputes do arise, having well-documented land rights agreements can expedite resolution and minimise operational disruptions.

Community Relations:

Secure land rights help foster good relationships with landowners and communities, as agreements are made transparently and with consent. This can lead to better cooperation and support from local stakeholders.

6. Expansion and Innovation

Network Expansion:

Secure land rights are essential for expanding the network to new areas, particularly in rural or underserved regions. This is vital for reaching new customers and increasing service coverage.

Technological Advancements:

As IDNOs incorporate new technologies (like smart grids), secure land rights allow them to deploy advanced infrastructure more easily. This can improve service delivery and efficiency.

In summary, secure land rights are foundational for IDNOs as they facilitate the development, maintenance, and expansion of distribution networks, ensure regulatory compliance, attract investment, and enhance operational efficiency. By securing these rights, IDNOs can operate more effectively and sustainably, ultimately providing better service to their customers.

CLM celebrates 2 years of the 4-day working week

CLM introduced the 4-day week 2 years ago. The concept of a 4-day working week has gained significant traction over the past few years, and numerous studies and trials have demonstrated its potential benefits. Here are some of the key advantages that have emerged:

  1. Increased Productivity: Like many companies that have implemented a 4-day work week CLM have reported higher productivity levels. Teams members tend to be more focused and efficient with their time, often completing the same amount of work in fewer hours.
  2. Improved Work-Life Balance: A shorter work week allows CLM employees more time to spend with family, pursue hobbies, and rest, leading to better overall life satisfaction and well-being. This improved balance can reduce burnout and stress.
  3. Enhanced Employee Satisfaction and Retention: Employees often feel more valued and satisfied with their jobs when they have a better work-life balance. This can lead to higher retention rates and lower turnover, saving companies the cost and effort associated with recruiting and training new staff.
  4. Better Mental Health: More free time can significantly improve mental health, as employees have more opportunities to relax and engage in activities they enjoy. Companies that have adopted a 4-day week often report lower levels of employee stress and anxiety.
  5. Environmental Benefits: A reduced work week can lead to fewer commutes, which in turn lowers carbon emissions and reduces traffic congestion. This makes a positive impact on the environment and can contribute to broader sustainability goals.
  6. Cost Savings: Both employees and employers can experience cost savings. Employees save on commuting costs and other work-related expenses, while employers can reduce operational costs related to office utilities and supplies.
  7. Positive Impact on Economy: Some studies suggest that a 4-day work week could stimulate the economy by increasing leisure spending. When people have more free time, they are more likely to spend money on entertainment, travel, and other activities, which can boost various sectors of the economy.

These benefits highlight the potential of a 4-day working week to transform the modern workplace, promoting a healthier, more sustainable, and more productive working environment.

When a 4-day work week is implemented correctly, businesses can ensure that clients still receive exemplary service. Here are some strategies and factors that have contributed to CLM maintaining high service standards:

  1. Strategic Scheduling: CLM stagger employee schedules so that our office remains open five days a week. This ensures continuous coverage and availability for clients.
  2. Improved Efficiency and Focus: Employees often become more productive and focused with a four-day work week, as they need to complete their tasks within a shorter time frame. This can lead to more efficient handling of client needs and faster response times.
  3. Enhanced Employee Morale: A shorter work week can boost employee morale and job satisfaction. Happier employees tend to provide better customer service, as they are more engaged and motivated.
  4. Better Health and Reduced Burnout: With an extra day off, employees can rest more and take care of their personal needs, leading to better overall health and reduced burnout. Healthier employees are more likely to be attentive and provide high-quality service.
  5. Clear Communication and Planning: Successful implementation requires clear communication and careful planning. The CLM Team are well-informed about their responsibilities and schedules, and clients are notified about any changes in office hours or service availability.
  6. Leveraging Technology: Technology can play a crucial role in maintaining service standards. Advanced automated systems and evolving online support, can ensure that client inquiries are addressed promptly, even when employees are not in the office.
  7. Client Feedback and Adjustment: Regularly seeking client feedback helps businesses understand if the 4-day work week is impacting service quality. This feedback can be used to make necessary adjustments to maintain or improve service standards.
  8. Training and Development: Ongoing training for employees can ensure they have the skills and knowledge to provide excellent service. Well-trained employees are more likely to handle client needs effectively, even within a compressed work week.

By carefully planning and implementing these strategies, CLM have been able to transition to a four-day work week while continuing to deliver high-quality service to our clients.

Director’s Statement 2024

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT 2024

As we wave goodbye to 2023 and welcome a new year, it seems the perfect time to recap on CLM’s activities over yet another transformative year and introduce ourselves to those who don’t yet know us!

2023

Last year saw huge growth in the EV sector and the delivery of consents for charging hubs across the UK. CLM is honoured to be at the forefront of this industry and is proud to be advising so many Charge Point Operators as well as challenging the consent process within the distribution networks to ensure best practice is shared and consents are obtained in a timely and effective manner, proportionate in nature to reflect the reduction in risk associated with this infrastructure, in comparison to a residential development for example. We remain absolutely focused on playing a key role in the UK’s role out of EV charging infrastructure.

Once again, we referred to our robust and evolving business strategy and concentrated on business capability, delivering continuous improvement, and creating sustainable success. This clear and collective vision has continued to ensure we are all working with the same shared objectives in mind and achieving outstanding results for our clients.

Our team have achieved so much in 2023. It has been a ground-breaking year in many aspects for CLM, not only our record completion total, turnaround time, number of new clients and collaborations in new industry sectors; but we have adapted and grown immeasurably in terms of mindset, experience, and sector specialism.

We are incredibly proud of our notable completions including:

  • Securing Land Rights for the UK’s largest public EV charging hub at the NEC in Birmingham
  • Securing a low compensation deal for a new data centre in Central London
  • Land Rights for a high power 30 bay charging hub in Gatwick
  • Securing Land Rights for SERGO’s new 5 million sq ft logistics park in Northampton

Based in Ketton, we have expanded our much-loved premises ensuring consistency for the team and clients who to visit us throughout the year for training or team building days. Our head office is also where we carry out our extensive internal training programme.

Business growth has also been seen the on boarding of a new Lead Coordinator who comes from within the industry and brings extensive experience, several new starters, promotions across departments, and our very first post grad appointment. This scalable business model shows CLM’s commitment to the individuals who all make more than a significant difference to CLM’s success. We work continuously to recruit the very best people to join our award-winning business and it is a privilege to watch their professional growth, highlights, and successes. We respect and value each of them.

Our ever-evolving Wellbeing Pillars now include the 4-day working week, private health care, fully subsidised gym membership and the CLM Golden Ticket, so no one has to work on their birthday! The team have been enjoying our Wellbeing Workshops which cover everything from wellbeing at work to diversity, equality and inclusion in the workplace. Working with teams from MHFA and Aviva we aim to provide the most effective training possible. As we enter a new year, we have more team members signed up for MHFA training as well as first aid refresher training.

2024

It’s the big one!!! This year marks our 10th year in business.

As we embark on a fresh new year with exciting projects to greet us, we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders. We are fortunate enough to work with clients who are committed to providing their customers with the highest level of service. Our ethos echoes that and we work intrinsically with our clients ensuring our capabilities are directly in line with their customer service standards. We are accountable throughout the process and ensure our process works in parallel to our client’s internal processes to achieve a ‘one team’ approach for the end client. This service is the very foundation of CLM and something we started with our very first clients, Matrix Networks and UK Power Solutions. We continue our company promise of reducing project risk from unknown third parties, acting with integrity and providing a professional approach, ensuring clients are aware of risks as well as providing cost certainty.

Over the past year CLM demonstrated over and over again our strengths as an organisation and made clear that when it comes to Land Rights, we really do deliver the difference. The work we are doing is more relevant than ever today and we offer an external Land Rights service which can support clients with both their IDNO network requirements, as well as the DNO element too.  The service we provide is an integral part of simplifying Land Rights. Our customers rely on our integrity to keep them informed and connected. 2024 is set to be another exciting year for CLM. Through collaboration with long term clients, we look forward to working on our variety of projects delivering the best service and outstanding customer experience.

How might CLM help you in 2024?

This year we will define and introduce our 5 key business areas, which are also supported by our sister company, Wilson Consultancy Strategic Solutions.

Over the coming months we will be introducing each of these areas to clients and showcasing how we can support our industry better, more inclusively across a whole project or portfolio to give the best advice and service; something we’re already really proud of!

For now, though, we wish all of our clients and networks a very prosperous new year from us all at CLM.

CLM Director’s Statement 2023

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT 2023

As we close the chapter on 2022 and welcome a new year, it seems the perfect time to recap on CLM’s activities over a transformative year, whilst looking forward to what 2023 brings.

2022

Last year saw huge growth in the EV sector and the delivery of consents for charging hubs across the UK. CLM is honoured to be part of the electric highways innovation and extremely happy to support the journey of our first EV client, GRIDSERVE. GRIDSERVE recognise the need for meaningful and lasting change and in 2017 started generating sustainable energy for critical infrastructure. Whilst GRIDSERVE aim to ‘move the needle on climate change’ to ‘leave this world a better place than we found it’, CLM take pride in supporting the mission of ‘innovating the solutions needed to deliver a paradigm shift’.

Once again, we referred to our robust and evolving business strategy and concentrated on business capability, delivering continuous improvement, and creating sustainable success. This clear and collective vision has continued to ensure we are all working with the same shared objectives in mind and achieving outstanding results for our clients.

CLM had the privilege of attending the EV World Congress held in London in October, with the aim to inspire, educate and connect those within the industry. We had the pleasure of hosting a CLM stand, alongside Envevo, eSmart Networks and Sinewave. As we have never actively marketed our services in the sector, we felt that coming out of Covid, it was a great opportunity to meet our clients and see people face to face. As the only Land Rights company to attend, it was hugely rewarding to be recognised for making a positive impact for our clients, both new and existing.

We have enjoyed a variety of recognition over the last 12 months, including being finalists at the first ‘Great British Wellbeing in the Workplace Awards’ held in March as well as for The DiversitEV Award at The Evies in October. In November, I was honoured to be awarded ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the Peterborough Telegraph Business Awards, and CLM being presented as ‘Employer of the Year’. These moments are hugely appreciated by us all at CLM and encourage us to set our standards high and deliver our very best to all those we work with.

Our team have achieved so much in 2022. It has been a ground-breaking year in many aspects for CLM, not only our record completion total, turnaround time, number of new clients and collaborations in new industry sectors; but we have adapted and grown immeasurably in terms of mindset, experience, and sector specialism.

  • The upgrade of Manchester City Football Club’s supply
  • Securing a low compensation deal for a new data centre in Central London
  • Land Rights for a high power 12 bay charging hub in Exeter
  • Securing Land Rights for SERGO’s new 5 million sq ft logistics park in Northampton

Based in Ketton, we have maintained the same, much loved premises ensuring consistency for the team and clients who to visit us throughout the year for training or team building days. Our head office is also where we carry out our extensive internal training programme.

Business growth has also been seen in the on boarding of a Senior Project Coordinator, 2 Project Coordinators and 2 Project Coordinator Administrators. This scalable business model shows CLM’s commitment to the individuals who all make more than a significant difference to CLM’s success. We work continuously to recruit the very best people to join our award-winning business and it is a privilege to watch their professional growth, highlights, and successes.

Our team’s commitment to wellbeing is evident in how each member champions our 5 company core values: Capabilities, Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Adaptability. Introducing the 4-day week plus a rest day, meant the CLM team needed to embrace every core value to ensure the seamless delivery of projects and communication. Adapting the team’s way of working whilst maintaining our exemplary client service level was pivotal to us and something we achieved with relative ease.

2023

As we embark on a fresh new year with exciting projects to greet us, we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders. We are fortunate enough to work with clients who are committed to providing their customers with the highest level of service.
