National Apprenticeship Week 2021

CLM’s Brand & Communications Manager, Victoria Magnall, joined the fascinating webinar ‘So long 2020, it’s time to build a better normal’ where Investors in People’s CEO Paul Devoy, People & OD Lead Beth Samson and Director of the London Progression Collaboration Anna Ambrose discussed how we can all play our part to build a better normal.

Specifically, this panel discussed the impact that investing in young talent can have on organisations. Considering over a third of young people lost their jobs in the pandemic, 2021 provides an ideal opportunity to bring young people back into work through learning schemes like apprenticeships.

The panel talked about what quality apprenticeships looks like, how businesses can measure the quality of an apprenticeship offer, the impact providing apprenticeships can have for your organisation and why ‘earn while you learn’ might just be the best way forwards to a faster economic recovery.

Proud members of IIP, CLM understand that high quality apprenticeship schemes are an ideal alternative to university and further education, suiting students leaving formal education and looking for employment which also provides them with on the job experience, qualifications, valuable mentor-ship and a salary.

CLM has been recognised for its commitment to investing in training, development and cultivating careers. With 5 generations making up the national workforce, we believe that offering learning scheme based employment could indeed be the route to a faster economic recovery and help to soften the impact Covid has had on employment among young people.

Furthermore, apprenticeships are not just for school leavers, they are a superb opportunity for businesses to up-skill or re-skill existing employees when restructuring the landscape of their business to fit the fast and evolving climate. The ROI is evident in staff retention, local employment, career progression, functional skills and a satisfied team who thrive in the workplace.

Ella Bryant, Business Administration Apprentice, who joined CLM in September 2019 says, ‘My apprenticeship at CLM has given me an amazing alternative to university as it has allowed me to learn valuable skills whilst on the job. CLM have provided me with extensive training throughout my apprenticeship and an opportunity to carve a career in a niche industry.

‘The team at CLM have always helped me with queries and supported me with my college work. My apprenticeship has also been a great way to learn a range of important skills such as confidence within my role’.

Ella went on to say, ‘I would urge anyone to take on an apprenticeship at CLM as they have consistently supported me through my learning and helped me in so many ways both inside work and with my college course.

‘Since day one with CLM, I have felt welcome, supported, valued and have genuinely loved my job. Starting an apprenticeship is a very daunting time especially if it is an industry that you have no knowledge about. However, this was not a hindrance and every member of the team has given me their time and has been eager to impart their knowledge to help me develop and learn new skills. I have grown and developed both personally and professionally with my apprenticeship, I honestly look forward to going to work each day and I am excited about a future career with CLM.’

At CLM, we agree that the businesses most likely to succeed in the current climate are not necessarily the longest established or the largest companies, but those businesses which are most adaptable and who employ the most agile and versatile team members. At CLM, our talent strategy is thriving, ensuring that training gaps are complete and to an exceptionally high standard, ensuring employee confidence and empowerment of skill set.

As 2021 speeds ahead, we are excited to be working side by side with Investors in People and exploring the apprenticeship journey further…there really has never been a more exciting time for apprentices in the market place and creating a successful and practical experience remains a priority for us at CLM.

CLM Glossary of Terms

Jargon and abbreviations are the infamous bane of most industries. Any new starter to a business will be on red alert for them during their first team meeting, wondering when to ask what the difference is between an Easement and an Engrossment, or what does IDNO and POA stand for. Each industry has its own set of terms and Land Rights is no exception.

CLM act on behalf of companies operating in the utility sector, providing outstanding project management whilst securing Gas & Electricity Land Rights. Our team specialise in the negotiation of easements, wayleaves, transfers and Leases, and liaise with tenants and landowners acquiring the necessary Rights to enable a timely energisation to site.

Seamless communication within our business, as well as with partners and clients is an essential part of delivering a successful service. CLM take communication seriously and our progressive client updates reflect that. Transparency is a fundamental part of our conversation (recognised in one of our 4 core values, ‘Accountability’). We ensure that our clients know exactly what is happening, when it’s happening and why it’s happening. We discuss next steps whilst reflecting the critical timeline so all parties understand what is required and have time to action their relevant processes.

One of our most viewed tools is our CLM Glossary of Terms, which is a terrific, comprehensive reference aid for those needing clarification on legal terms. We incorporate it in to our in-house training and make it available on our website for anyone seeking explanations of terminology. Simplifying Land Rights has always been an objective of CLM’s and this handy document certainly goes a long way in helping to decipher some commonly used industry terms.

CLM Director’s Statement 2021

As the calendar year comes to an end and we embrace 2021 and all that it brings, it seems fitting to recap on events and learnings of 2020 whilst also setting significant and robust company objectives.

To quote Construction News, ‘The challenges of the past year have been immense, and the next 12 months are unlikely to be a quiet ride’, so balancing resilience and unpredictability, with informed preparation will be key during the continual new normal.

2020

Since Covid, CLM have continually levelled up in terms of business improvement. Not only ensuring that our current client portfolio received our very best service, but we also welcomed new business.

We referred to our business strategy and concentrated on business capability, delivering continuous improvement, and creating sustainable success. This clear and collective vision has ensured we are all working with the same shared objectives in mind and achieving outstanding results for our clients.

Our team have adapted seamlessly to working from home, thanks to technology introduced and integrated at the start of 2020, ensuring we could respond rather than react to the pandemic. It has been a record year in many respects for CLM, including number of completions, delivery time and number of new clients.

Training and development have come in all forms, from intensive leadership qualifications, online training via RAU and Peterborough College to 1-2-1 coaching sessions for those new in role. We have developed all team members with in-house training ensuring we are a flourishing, inter-skilled team.

Living Our Company Values

Our team’s commitment to wellbeing is evident in how each member lives and breathes our company core values of Capabilities, Accountability, Integrity and Respect. As a business, we use several channels to open up healthy debate among the team; from one to ones, mentoring and engaging team meetings.

Costain group safety, health and environment director, Lawrence Webb says, ‘The spectre of COVID is still hanging over us and I would absolutely reinforce messages that I’ve heard from my health, safety and environment colleagues all across our industry for many months now and that is: please maintain your focus on the wellbeing of us as individuals, as teams and as an industry. Our physical and mental wellbeing is absolutely key to us all getting through this’.

CLM is extremely fortunate to employ an incredible team of individuals who care, not only about their clients and projects, but also each other.

Navigating Covid 19

Over the last 9 months, the CLM team have risen to the challenges of the pandemic by demonstrating a variety of valued characteristics.

  • Teamwork and support have been outstanding, with colleagues really stepping up to cover workloads ensuring our project delivery remains seamless.
  • Project co-ordinators have nurtured projects through to completion in record time using smart ways of working and innovative channels of communication.
  • The team have pooled their skills to head up regular meetings both internally and with external clients via Microsoft Teams, never losing that human touch which matters so much, particularly now.
  • As Investors In People, our team have demonstrated their resilience and capabilities both in and out the workplace; supporting, inspiring and empowering each other. This has been seen via numerous training courses, delivering continuous improvements and creating sustainable business success.

2021

Our team are at the heart of resilient leadership, with a specialised management structure, focusing on:

  • team queries and project allocation
  • obtaining third party consents and providing industry related training
  • dealing with complex projects and in-house training

‘In some ways, the coronavirus has acted as a shot in the arm for the industry. We’ve seen greater cooperation and collaboration with great leadership. If I had to pick one thing out, then it has to be what may be called a productivity revolution; the industry has to prepare to work in a different way.’ ~ Wates group commercial director Simon Potter

We are fortunate enough to work with clients who are committed to providing their customers with the highest level of service. Our ethos echoes that and we work intrinsically with our clients ensuring the CLM team is trained directly in line with their customer service standards. We continue our company promise of reducing project risk from unknown third parties, providing a professional approach, ensuring clients are aware of risks as well as cost certainty.

Thriving Partnerships

We are a small team who make a big impact; our team are thriving during these unprecedented times and this truly confirms their professionalism and conscientiousness, for which CLM is recognised. We are enormously grateful to our committed and conscientious clients who, with our dynamic team, are set to deliver some exceptional results in 2021!

DNOs, IDNOs & Connection Providers

DNOs, IDNOs & Connection Providers

When new developments require electricity supply, the organisation who owns the cables in that area will confirm whether there is available capacity. This Distribution Network Operator (DNO), will also own or ‘adopt’ any new cables or infrastructure installed to provide the supply. However, there is another option as Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) can also own the new network.

What is a Distribution Network Operator (DNO)?

Licenced by Ofgem, the 14 Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) across England, Scotland and Wales (responsible for a specific geographical area) are owned by six ownership groups:

  • Electricity North West
  • Northern Powergrid
  • Scottish and Southern Electricity
  • ScottishPower Energy Networks
  • UK Power Networks
  • Western Power Distribution

The above DNOs operate and maintain the electricity infrastructure (such as pylons, substations and cables) and are responsible for remedying any power cuts or faults. The DNO will ‘adopt’ any new cables or substations to their network in order to install a new supply.

What is an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO)?

Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) also own, operate and maintain the electricity infrastructure. The networks which they adopt are the new, installed assets which will integrate into a DNO’s network. Unlike the DNOs, they are not restricted to a specific geographical area. They are regulated by Ofgem in the same way as DNOs are, although with slightly amended licence conditions.

What is the difference between getting my new connection adopted by the DNO or IDNO?

Regardless of whether your new connection is adopted by the DNO or the IDNO, each is equally responsible for the operation and maintenance of the installation.

If you ask the DNO to install your new connection for you, it can only be adopted by the DNO.

If you ask an Independent Connections Provider (ICP), to install your new connection for you, it can be adopted by either the DNO or an IDNO.

The key difference is that the IDNO will offer an upfront sum of money, called an ‘Asset Value’, which is payable upon energisation of your supply.

The amount of the Asset Value is dependent upon the amount of energy to be used and whether it is metered at High Voltage (HV) or Low Voltage (LV).

The role of CLM

Primarily CLM act on behalf of Independent Connection Providers to manage and facilitate any land rights consents which may be required on a project. CLM acquire consents on behalf of:

  • Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs)
  • Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)
  • Independent Gas Transporters (IGTs)
  • Gas Transporters (GTs)

How CLM support IDNOs

CLM act on behalf of statutory undertakers, connection providers and private landowners. We have a vast range of experience in the negotiation, management and legal completion of easements, land acquisitions, wayleaves and consents, associated with new electricity, gas and water connections. We recognise the importance of bridging the gap between landowners, connection providers and the adopting networks and provide effective management, ensuring lines of communication remain open throughout the process and legal agreements are completed without delay.

How CLM support the Independent Connection Provider

As CLM are not limited to one network or utility we are not restricted in terms of who work with or where we work. We act on behalf of the ICP, talking directly to their client and managing all consent requirements. The benefits of using CLM include:

  • Reduces project risk from unknown third parties
  • Professional approach
  • Client aware of risks
  • Cost certainty

We also provide specialist advice to Independent Connection Providers in relation to proposed routes and regularly carry out route proving exercises in order to provide clarity on any possible consents, as early as possible. This involves our team reviewing a proposed route(s) and identifying any third party interests. We are experienced in managing complex third party negotiations with landowners, Network Rail, Canals and Rivers Trust, The Crown Estate and other national stakeholders.

The forms of consent managed by CLM include:

  • Deed of Grant of Easement
  • Lease
  • Land Acquisition – Transfer of Part
  • Wayleave Agreements
  • Construction Licence

CLM Win SBS Award!

CLM have recently been awarded the prestigious Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday award.

The SBS Twitter campaign, launched by former Dragon’s Den Theo Paphitis, promoted CLM to his half a million followers, which highlighted the outstanding services offered to their clients.

Connections Legal Management (CLM) act on behalf of statutory undertakers and private landowners, negotiating and managing the seamless legal completion of easements, land acquisitions and consents associated with new utility connections. Being recognised for their outstanding work raises the profile of Land Rights and the integral part CLM play in energising developments.

Directors, Laura and Hamish Wilson, attended the SBS 2020 Event in February, meeting Theo and attending a variety of talks discussing innovation, brand alignment and marketing projection as well as a ‘Fireside Q&A’ session with Theo Paphitis himself and fellow Dragon, Sara Davies.

CLM director, Laura Wilson said, “We are thrilled to join the engaging #SBS community, who have made us feel so welcome. We all support each other via various social media platforms and the weekly #SBSwinnershour so the #SBSevent2020 is a terrific opportunity to meet other business owners over lunch and strengthen those relationships.”

Hamish Wilson, director of CLM added: “There is real value in events such as these, whereby likeminded businesses leaders can take time out of their organisations to share successful strategies with each other.

“At CLM we help our clients by taking the stress out of land rights and our aim for 2020 is to help even more clients by delivering an efficient, reliable and seamless service.”

CLM’s 2020 Vision

CLM have spent the past 5 years developing and refining our process to ensure we are completely customer focused.

Today’s 2020 Vision launch brings together all our key learnings and reinforces our core values with a clear mission. Our team specialise in working on behalf of Independent Connection Providers, Utility Connection Providers and landowners to guide them through the land rights processes for new utility connections. We recognise the importance of clear effective communication. We are actively involved in the development of network land right policy and are committed to ensuring those requirements are met.

Our message is clear; we will deliver efficient projects for those who are committed to best service.
